Have more questions?

We are in-network with most insurances including HMSA, HMAA (Hawaii Medical Assurance Association) and Medicare. While we are in network, each client policy is unique, which is why nutrition benefits have to be verified prior to your appointment. We do not accept Medicaid or any Medicaid plans.

Insurance FAQs

We recommend calling the 800 number on the back of your insurance card and asking the following questions (you can use this form as well):

  • Are nutrition counseling services covered under my policy?
  • If they ask you for a CPT code, provide them with the following codes: 97802 & 97803. If they tell you that you do not have coverage for those codes, ask them to check your coverage for the following CPT codes: 99401, 99402, 99403 and 99404.
  • Does my policy cover nutrition services for the following ICD-10 codes: Z71.3 and/or Z72.4. If they say, “no,” ask them what diagnosis codes are covered.
  • How many visits are covered per calendar year?
  • Is a physician referral required?
  • Have I met my deductible? If you have not met your deductible, you will pay out of pocket for nutrition services. This amount will then be applied towards your deductible.
  • Do I have a copay for nutrition services? Nutrition is considered a specialty, so typically the specialist copay is applicable to your visit.
  • If needed, please download this MD referral form (Or Medicare referral form)and have your doctor’s office fax to us at 808-663-0321

How do I know if my insurance policy covers nutrition counseling services?

If you have a high deductible plan, you will pay out of pocket for nutrition counseling at the time of service. The amount will be applied to your deductible until you have met it.

What if I have a high deductible health insurance plan?

In the event we are not in-network with your insurance company, ask your insurance if you have any out-of-network benefits for nutrition services. If yes:

  • You can book your session and pay out of pocket for nutrition counseling at the time of service
  • We will then provide you with a “superbill” (itemized healthcare receipt)
  • You file a claim with your insurance company for possible reimbursement

Reimbursement is not guaranteed and will depend on your policy and whether or not you have any out-of-network benefits.

PLEASE CONTACT US IF WE ARE NOT IN-NETWORK AND YOU DO NOT HAVE OUT OF NETWORK BENEFITS.

What if you are not in-network with my insurance company?

  • Medicare ONLY covers nutrition counseling services if you have a diagnosis of Type 1 Diabetes, Type 2 Diabetes or Renal/Kidney Disease.
  • Nutrition services for the above conditions are covered at 100%, meaning you will have no out of pocket cost!
  • Medicare requires a referral from a Physician (MD/DO) in order to cover nutrition services. They will not accept any referrals from a Nurse Practitioner (ARNP) or Physician Assistant (PA).
  • If you are seeking nutrition services for a condition OTHER than the above covered diagnoses (Diabetes or Renal/Kidney Disease) and you have Medicare AND a supplemental insurance policy OR a Medicare Advantage plan, it is possible nutrition services are covered. We can help you verify these benefits. You will still need a referral from your physician.
  • Please download our Medicare Referral Form and have your physician fax it to us at 808-663-0321

I am self-pay. How much are your packages?

Fees vary per package/service and I offer a10% discount for prepaid 1:1 packages. Email or call us at 646-400-8723 for more details.

How many sessions do I need?

Nutrition counseling is highly personalized to your needs and where you are on your healthy eating journey. Therefore each client is different. Some people need one or two visits for education and awareness, but many clients require multiple sessions or ongoing support to create and maintain lifelong habits. Research shows that ongoing, regular visits with a RDN help clients reach and maintain health and nutrition goals.

Many clients meet weekly or bi-weekly to start and then move to more spaced out check ins for accountability and to stay on track.

If you have a session limit or are paying out of pocket we will be mindful of that and plan accordingly.

General FAQs

How do I make an appointment?

Once benefits are verified (or you are self-pay) you will receive a link to choose your appointment time and date.
Sessions are virtual and conducted via HIPPA-compliant Zoom. If you need help scheduling email or call us and we gladly set it up.

How long are appointments?

Initial appointments are 75-90 minutes and follow ups 45-60 minutes. Shorter sessions can be offered in the maintenance phase to help you stay on track.

What info can my doctor provide?

Please have your physician fax us our referral form, your most recent visit notes, and labs to 808-663-0321 BEFORE your first appointment. Many insurances require a referral and medical documentation in order to bill. If we do not receive this documentation prior to your appointment we may need to reschedule your appointment.

What do I need to make an appointment?

  1. Insurance verification: Call your insurance and verify nutrition services coverage
  2. MD referral and applicable notes/labs
  3. Intake forms (personal information, medical history, lifestyle questionnaire, etc)
  4. We require a credit card to hold your appointment. This is for any patient responsibility (copays, etc.), and our policy regarding late cancellations or no-shows.
  5. Internet/Computer with camera/audio for virtual session
  6. A desire to make some meaningful changes to your eating/lifestyle habits:)

What is your Cancelation/No-Show Policy?

Interested in working together?

I’ve tried so many diets already. Will this one work for me?

Luckily Intuitive Eating is not a diet! It is an entirely different approach to health and eating which focuses on ditching the diet mentality so you can make peace with food and your body.

Will I lose weight?

Many of my clients are at odds with their body and are looking for a new way to lose weight. However, in order to help you become an intuitive eater, we have to put weight loss on the backburner. In fact, many of my clients feel relieved to not focus on weight for the first time in their lives. By exploring your relationship to food and attune you to your body’s signals you’ll shift to intuitive nourishment and your weight might change. But this is not the focus of our work. Through the journey of intuitive eating you will heal your mind from the diet mentality, your body from the trauma of diets, and your weight will find its’ “True north”.

“I heard that I can eat whatever and as much as I want on this program. That sounds like a recipe for binge eating and weight gain!”

This is one of the biggest concerns I hear. Interestingly enough, our restrictive diet thinking is much more of a trigger for overeating. Even science is showing this. But once you’ve made peace with all foods and know how to listen to your body’s feelings of hunger, fullness, and satisfaction your food choices and eating patterns will normalize and “off limit” foods will lose their appeal.

How long is this going to take?

Everybody's process is different. It depends on your personal history of dieting and “un-intuitive” eating. Some of us have a lot of diet mentality to let go off and others need to re-learn to connect with their body, it’s signals, and their true needs. While this sounds like a lot to do it is meaningful work and will get you off the diet roller coaster for good. Our sessions meet you where you are at and help you build habits that nourish while shedding those which don’t.
